The current economic model forces an inefficient choice: either the agent cannot access the data, or it must pay for a full subscription it doesn’t need.
To unlock the potential of the agent economy, a new financial infrastructure is required, one built on the principle of high-volume microtransactions. When the cost of a financial transaction approaches zero, it becomes economically viable for agents to pay for precisely the value they consume, when they consume it—a penny’s worth of data, a fraction of a cent for a single API call.62 This enables true, real-time price discovery for all digital services and requires several key infrastructural components:
- Programmable Payment Assets: Agents need a native digital medium of exchange that can be transacted programmatically without human intervention. Cryptocurrencies, particularly stablecoins (which are pegged to a stable asset like the U.S. dollar), provide the stability and machine-compatibility necessary for these automated transactions.62
- Massively Scalable Transaction Processors: Traditional payment rails like credit card networks or ACH are too slow and expensive to support millions of agent-driven microtransactions per second. New, highly scalable transaction processing layers, potentially built on blockchain technology or other distributed ledger systems, are needed to make real-time agent commerce viable at near-zero cost.62
